Review

My Soul to Keep is the third novel in Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series. In the previous two books, Kaylee and Nash met, fell in love and realised the lengths they would go to prove their love for each other. Without giving away the plot, My Soul to Keep is a whole different matter as Nash fundamentally betrays Kaylee and her character is tested to the limit as she must overcome her shock and pain to push forward nevertheless and save the lives of Nash and her father.

My Soul to Keep starts with Kaylee and Nash at a party where a classmate is using Demon’s Breath. It’s deadly and highly addictive and of course, it’s from the Netherworld; Kaylee is going to find out just how this dangerous substance ended up in the hands of kids at her school. What Kaylee finds out is shocking and puts her life and those she loves in grave danger.
As with all the books in the series, the best character in the book is Tod and I cannot wait to see more of him. I felt every emotion that Kaylee felt throughout the book. Betrayal, shock, hurt, fear… All those emotions are so cleverly written into the story along with a strong sense of being there. The ending was fierce although I expected nothing less from Kaylee; she’s a strong independent young woman and has really grown into her character.
Rachel Vincent has a terrific style of writing, and is able to convey humour, sarcasm and descriptions effortlessly, without weighing down the flow of the story. I’d recommend My Soul to Keep to all fans of young adult, supernatural fiction. Fans of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy will love the banshees and demons in this series.

“Regret couldn’t fix what he’s broken. Apologies couldn’t bring back what he’s lost. What we’d lost.”

“Damn it, Tod!” He glared in the reaper’s general direction. “Do not sneak up on me in my own house–I don’t care how dead you are! Show yourself or get out.”
Harmony and I shared a small smile, but my father didn’t notice.
The reaper shrugged and grinned at me, then blinked out of the chair and onto the carpet at my father’s back, now fully corporeal. “Fine,” he said, inches from my dad’s ear, and my father nearly jumped out of his shirt. “Your house, your rules.”
My dad spun around, his flush deepening until I thought his face would explode. “I changed my mind. Get out!”

“But before I could come up with an answer, Tod appeared in the desk chair, where I’d sat minutes earlier. ‘Hey. Am I interrupting something?’
‘Yes,’ Nash said. ‘Get out.’
But Tod was watching me, and I could tell from the angry line of his jaw that he’d been listening long before he showed himself. He’d heard what Avari had done to me. What Nash had let him do.
‘You want me to go?’ Tod asked me, his back to his brother.
Nash implores me silently to say yes. Tod waited patiently.
‘No,’ I said, looking right at Nash. He scowled, and his shoulders sagged.
‘Good.’ Tod stood and kicked the rolling chair out of his way. ‘I just checked on your friend in the straitjacket. But first…’ The reaper swung before either of us realized what he intended to do.
Tod’s very sold first slammed into Nash’s jaw. Nash’s head snapped back. He stumbled into the wall. Tod shook his hand like it hurt. ‘That’s for what you let him do to Kaylee.”

So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn’t wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can’t cry for someone who has no soul.
The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad’s ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend’s loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can’t possibly understand.

Kaylee can’t let that happen, even if trying to save their souls  means putting her own at risk.

Review

Rachel Vincent does it again guys. I enjoyed this addition to the Soul Screamers series just as much as I did the 1st book and the short novella preceding the 1st novel.
Totally loved the pacing of the novel. Once the book starts so does the plot. There are no chapter fillers or any nonsense. Every page is important.
My Soul to Save is a bit darker and more of the book is set in the creepy Netherworld, a world hidden away from ours by a veil that is only crossable by some supernatural beings, which is populated by monsters and deformed creatures that are dangerous in more ways than imaginable. In the Netherworld everything thing and everyone wants to eat you, definitely not a place for a weekend getaway. I felt like this book really started to develop the soul screamers world and expand on a set of characters that I have already started to love.
In My Soul to Save Tod the Grim Reaper makes a bigger appearance, which is great because he really is one of the best characters in the series. As a Grim Reaper Tod holds the importance of souls above all else and he takes it really hard when a friend of his (in his previous earth-bound life) sells her soul, without realising what that means and what it means for her future. Along with Kaylee and Nash they set out to help Tod, to help his friend, despite the overwhelming odds of dealing with demons, monsters, the Netherworld and one very over-protective parent.
My Soul to Save was well written, unexpected and filled with a wonderful and interesting cast of characters that are anything but forgettable.

“You two are cracked,” Tod snapped.
My smile widened. “Says the undead man in love with the soulless pop star.”

Review

That’s some way to start a series. It was so damn intriguing. I sure can say that I did like it but then I have so many questions and it left me wanting more. In this short prequel, we meet Kaylee Cavanaugh and her best friend Emma. Kaylee was a very normal teenager, she has a best friend and of course teenage dilemmas. Talk about plotting revenge with the help of the best friend. Everything was fine until she had this weird feeling. Her panic attack started happening and she started seeing this black figure and then she started screaming. When she woke up she was in the Mental Health Centre.

I have to commend the author for the vivid writing. I imagined Kaylee hysterical and screaming. I was caught with the moment and ask myself what just happened? The aftermath of the commotion got me angry with Aunt Val and the whole situation. The ending had me so many questions. Questions that I think only the first book will answer. This story is completely different from anything else I’ve read in the YA paranormal genre and I would highly recommend giving it a try. My only warning would be make sure you can get hold of My Soul to Take soon after reading it as I’m sure you’ll be left desperate to know what happens next!
